Southwest history is pretty interesting. The 1790 Naturalization Act only let “free white persons” become citizens, so to annex land after the war, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo basically coded Mexicans as “white” by legal fiat.
The treaty gave a year to decide whether Mexicans wanted to sell their property tax-free and head south across the new boundary, or remain and be fully recognized U.S. citizens.
90% chose to stay and be part of building the newly forming states and country. Which makes them foundational in a real, meaningful sense.
Certainly out West, Mexicans have been our brothers for centuries and are considered as such by U.S. law, since before the Civil War.
There is no reason Hispanics should be regarded as—or regard themselves as—a victim minority class. It’s ridiculous.
Especially if it means forsaking the white euro card in favor of alignment with groups who endeavor to be victims.
