On its birthday some thoughts on Satisfaction. A turning point for being one of the most perfect rock songs ever written and it’s the biggest hit on what I think is the first actually perfect Stones album. The sort of overlooked or forgotten Out Of Our Heads in ‘65.

Most of the early records were just 12 tracks of blues and rock n roll cover songs.

Out of Our Heads is unique in a few ways. First, Satisfaction and a couple others they wrote themselves which is a pivotal moment.

Aso they switched R&B styles so instead of Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry they went Soul for many of the tracks. Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, making it a really unique effort the time that showed their versatility and hinted at their future ability to evolve and transform themselves.

A skill that has kept them relevant for over half a century. ‘65 was the first hint they were not just good but legends being born.

That Soul vibe is has popped up a lot over the years, and is still in the arsenal as recently as Hackney Diamonds in 2023 where they dip into American roots Gospel again in a masterful way.
